A few facts:
The Medway towns are Rochester, Chatham, Gillingham, Strood and Rainham
The area is in the county of Kent in South East England and the nearest airports are London City, Hartmann Road, Royal Docks, London E16 2PX and London Southend at Rochford Road, Southend-On-Sea SS2 6YF.
The town of Gillingham is pronounced with a soft “g” as in “jug” rather than the “g” in gift which is the “Gillingham” in Dorset.

At the time of the Norman Conquest, Gillingham was just a small hamlet but nowadays there are many things to see and do in Medway.
Chatham Naval Memorial – the memorial commemorates 8517 sailors of the First World War and 10,098 of the Second World War. Find it at 61 Kings Bastion, Gillingham ME7 5DQ. It was opened by the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) on 26th April 1924.
My Great Uncle Ken is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial and I was able to download a certificate on the website. You can search for a record and print out a memorial here.

Riverside Country Park is situated alongside the River Medway estuary between Rainham and Gillingham and is around 100 hectares. Royal Engineers Museum, Prince Arthur Road, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 1UR. A very large collection of internationally significant objects. The museum tells the sotory of the Corps of Royal Engineers and how they have helped the British Army to move and fight for over 300 years.
HMS Cavalier is preserved as The National Destroyer Memorial to commemorate the 11,000 lives lost during WWII – at The Historic Dockyard, Main Gate Road, Chatham, ME4 4TE. HMS Cavalier resides in No.2 Dry Dock
Rochester Castle is a 12th Century Keep on the east bank of the River Medway. It’s one of the best preserved in England or France and looked after by English Heritage at Castle Hill, Rochester ME1 1SW
Capstone Farm Country Park – 114 hectares of converted farm land. Capstone Road, Gillingham ME7 3JF. There are opportunities for running, walking, cycling and a variety of habitats including ancient woodlands, a freshwater lake and old orchards.

Medway Queen – Gillingham Pier, Pier Approach Road, Gillingham ME7 1RX. If you like boats, then a visit here is a must. The Medway Queen was used as a minesweeper in WWII and is most famous for her seven trips to Dunkirk in 1940. From 1966 to 1974 she became a nightclub in The Isle of Wight. She continues to be a restoration project and the hull has now been rebuilt with support from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the European Development Fund.
