Eastbourne’s claim to fame is that it’s the sunniest place in the South East and the UK. The best place to bask in the sun around this East Sussex town is on Beachy Head clifftop with stunning views of the English Channel and the South Downs (BN20 7YA). It is based in the South Downs National Park and is one of the UK’s most well known coastal landforms as one of the highest chalk cliff faces.
In October runners from across the world descend on the South Downs to take part in the Beachy Head Marathon, a tiring and demanding 26-mile course across the famous beauty spot. But if pub grub and drinks are more your thing, stop off at the Beachy Head Pub for a drink and meal and enjoy the splendid panoramic views over Eastbourne. Just a few steps away from the pub in the memorial to RAF Bomber Command.
The tiny hamlet of Birling Gap is slowly disappearing due to coastal erosion and is now managed by the National Trust. There is a visitor centre and you can also enjoy fossil hunting and rockpooling on the wonderful beach.
